My Students

I teach senior AP English Literature and my students are the best and brightest in the school. Unlike the vast majority of teens today, they love to read, and it's a crying shame that our school can't provide them with enough books.

Modern literature reflects the concerns of modern lives.

The problem is, it doesn't come cheap. Copyright laws protect works created after 1923 from reproduction, so with our budget limitations, our curriculum tends to lean heavily on the nineteenth century. I've been cobbling together class sets of "The Once and Future King," "Waiting" and "Remains of the Day" for several years, and it would be such a blessing and relief to be able to fill in the remaining gaps so I can offer copies to every student at the same time. Right now, there's a complicated round-robin kind of arrangement where faster readers check the book out first so they can rush through and get them to the slower readers by the time the unit is due. As you might imagine, this is less than ideal if the goal is to offer every student access to the book.

My Project

"The Once and Future King" is a modern retelling of the King Arthur saga. The basis for the musical "Camelot," its humorous, humanistic worldview has influenced modern American life even for those who've never read it. "Waiting" is a powerfully written, yet subtle and understated novel about wasted time, muted passion, and the invisible, yet unbreakable bonds between people who have nothing in common. "The Remains of the Day" masterfully recreates a bygone era of rigid etiquette and propriety and examines the cost of a life lived without love or risk.

Books make our lives larger.

They transport us into the past, show us glimpses of the future, and allow us to live lives alongside people we will never meet. Considering all they do for our students, they are a bargain. Just a few dollars can open whole new worlds for these kids. Thank you.
