My Students

Teaching literacy or reading to children while they are in preschool is imperative to their future reading abilities. Did you know that 50% of a person's intellectual potential is developed from birth to 5 years of age? Having these books, CDs, and props are essential in helping them become readers.

My students are 3, 4, and 5 year old children with autism, developmental delays, and speech language impairments.

Our school is considered a "high needs school" and lacks the resources to provide our classroom with more books and literacy props. When people think of children with disabilities, sometimes they think that they can't or don't need to learn to read, especially because they are in preschool. Look at the pictures of my students on our class webpage. Do you see the curiosity and interest in their faces? Preschool is the perfect time to teach literacy and reading skills, and whether they have or don't have disabilities is not the point. All children need to develop reading skills and learn about literacy. My students absorb everything we teach like little sponges and are learning to become readers despite their different 'abilities'.

My Project

Finding ways to engage my young students in literature is a priority in helping them develop into readers. Using Dr. Seuss books on CD and other books like these during independent centers will provide them with opportunities to develop independence in listening to stories and following along. Reading nonfiction books like the Seasons & Weather Theme pack is also part of helping them understand that books are connections to real life and not just about made up stories and characters. Taking a book like Shopping With Dad and reading it during whole group and then having the students use a real shopping cart to 'go shopping' provides them with real experiences to connect to the book. Using story props like The Napping House story prop kit we are requesting is yet another way to help them develop their understanding of literature by engaging in different activities that involve the literature we read.

Helping children learn to read is so much more than just reading a story to them.

Using our own imagination to help develop theirs is part of the fun in teaching reading. Developing reading skills should be a priority for both parents and teachers, and helping children make connections between their life, the books they read, and the world around them is essential if we are going to truly develop 'readers'. Help us teach vital skills to young children during this critical age of development.
