Our Crayon Box Is Learning to Be Respectful to Stop Bullying

My students need clipboards, a pencil sharpener, learning games, and anti-bullying books to help them learn to work together.

My Students

We could learn a lot from crayons; some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, while others bright, some have weird names, but they all have learned to live together in the same box. ~Robert Fulghum. My students are this box of crayons and they need to learn how to get a long no matter what.

My students are eager learners.

They come from all different backgrounds. I have students who speak English as a second language. Our school is also close to a military base so we do get some military students. Although they all have different backgrounds, they all come to 2nd grade excited to learn and start reading chapter books.

My Project

My students have been struggling with getting along with one another and this has led to some bullying. We have 2 rules in my class: be respectful and be responsible. It has been hard for my students to remember to be respectful to each other. I have been implementing learning games into our daily routine and putting them together in groups or partners with other students they wouldn't normally play with. I've seen students who had been bullying each other become friends when they are placed in positions to work together. I'm asking for clipboards for my students to work on when they are not at their desks, a pencil sharpener because no work is done when the pencils are dull. I'm also requesting some interactive learning games to teach my students to work in groups and that they don't always have to win. Lastly, I am requesting 5 Bullying in School books, while most of my students won't be able to read them, I want my students who can read it, to share what they learned with others.

Everyone wins and everyone expects to get put into groups where they'll get along with everyone.

This has become the attitude of many in society. A crayon box has many different crayons, yet they all learn to live together in the same box. I want my students to feel comfortable coming to school, knowing they are an important part of our crayon box. These tools will help provide that for me class. My students learn how to respect all students and through that, bullying is stopped.
