This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember being in band or choir and losing your music constantly or always finding pages out of order? My students are there with you! We don't have choral folios, and their music falls out of pocket folders so easily that we are always missing parts and pages. Choral folios will help organize them!

My students live in an urban community in New Jersey.

86.6% of my students have free or reduced lunches, and most-- recent immigrants from Latin America with a handful from Eastern Europe--are just starting to learn English. Despite the setbacks they face, they are bright, eager, excited to learn, and they LOVE TO SING! They bring their rich Latin American, Caribbean, and Balkan heritage to the classroom every day and sing with passionate enthusiasm. Our school is a college prep school that implements the AVID system. This requires all students to keep all class materials, including choir materials, in one three inch three-ring binder, which means our music is kept in folders in the binder. It falls out easily and is very heavy to hold, but their spirit is indomitable and they persevere in spite of these difficulties.

My Project

I'm requesting choral folios, or binders, for my students to use. My students will be able to keep their music in a cabinet in my classroom in these folios, where it will be readily accessible and never lost! In addition, the folios are lightweight and hold music with an elastic strap so that it is easy for students to turn pages and sing with correct posture! Choral folios also look neat and professional for auditions and performances. Students currently hold their huge three inch binders, just their music, and some memorize it- we look like a scattered mess! Folios will organize my students, help them sing with better posture, and keep them looking neat and professional for performances. Help them achieve perfection in looks and sound!

Music is often overlooked in education, but it is so important!

It is the perfect integration of math, English, and science. Students use math to place value on notes, fractions to subdivide beats. The English integration comes into play interpreting lyrics. Science teaches us about octaves, intervals, and frequencies. Finally, reading music is like interpreting code, reading a foreign language. Help my students organize, sing with great posture, and maximize learning time with choral folios!
