Organization Stations: Help Create a G&T Learning Environment

My students need art supplies to create a 3D rain forest and community in the classroom.

My Students

Have you ever walked into a Rainforest Cafe and really felt like you were in the rainforest? We are trying to recreate this experience in our classroom using all that we have learned about this fascinating ecosystem.

My students attend public school in New York and are Gifted and Talented first graders.

We explore through a project based curriculum in which the students' interests lead us on our path to discovery. Questioning and wondering guides us in our studies. Group projects and activities stimulate the minds of gifted learners and keep them asking questions.

My Project

My students have researched thoroughly the structure of the rainforest as well as many plants and animals that live in this habitat. Their use of scientific vocabulary in everyday conversations has greatly increased since we began this study. It also emphasizes the importance and skill of reading nonfiction texts as well as writing about nonfiction topics. After studying the rainforest, I asked the students what they wanted to do with what they learned. They agreed they should construct a rainforest in our classroom and we are in need of art supplies to create the various plant and animal life. My students came up with a list of supplies including eyes, felt, foam, and pom-poms to make 3D animals, growing actual flowers, and using tissue paper to make more lifelike plants.

This project is of such importance because the students decided on the topic, the project, and the supplies they would require.

As a culminating project to our study of the biomes, they chose this ecosystem to move forward on creating. I am looking forward to observing their productivity, creativity, and teamwork on this project and hope it leads to more teachable moments.
