Orchestra Program Needs Instruments

My Students

Our students are a part of an orchestra program that is over 40 years old. Unfortunately our instruments are over 40 years old.

Our students are in a Chicago Public High School.

Most of the students in the orchestra program are music majors. They are very devoted to the music program. Most are involved in extracurricular music activities. Our students come from a mostly latino background. They are also in a low income area.

My Project

We are requesting instruments for our program. Our goal is to have enough instruments so that the students will not have to share them. Sharing the instruments means that the students cannot practice outside of class. It also means that they have a difficult time going out and performing for others. We would like to build up an inventory of enough instruments to at least give the advanced students their own violins, violas, cellos, and basses. The poor quality instruments is also a crutch for our students. They are constantly fighting to make a good sound out of them. It is very difficult to play an instrument when it does not work properly.

Having their own high quality instruments would mean the students would progress much faster in their musical abilities.

They would feel much more confident in their abilities if they were not fighting against a poor quality instrument.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
