This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How can I get my students' parents involved in their child's education and inform them of what their child has been learning in class and accomplishing in science learning? I want parents to come to back-to-school night or open house and see the recording of what is taking place inside the classroom

My students come from a low socioeconomic neighborhood, living in single parent homes.

Some are facing the hardship of living one day with a dad and the next day with a mom. Some have fathers who are in jail. It is difficult to get parents involved in their children's learning, to remind their children to do homework, or to get them to set aside time to come to open house night or to have a parent conference. These single parents work long hour to support their children; they place their total trust on teachers to solve every problem. These students come to learn science, full of curiosity, full of energy to do something "fun", like looking at cells through a microscope, and doing hands-on activities. Yet, my students can not even read, write, or doing computations at their grade level. If they could only get some support and motivation from home, I believe they would get to the next level in their education.

My Project

I plan to use a camcorder to record what my students are learning in class, doing hands-on activities to explore cells, survey their peers on genetic traits, creating model of DNA, and producing a mitosis flip book to make sense of the abstract concepts. I want to record my students as they present their findings in front of the class. I want to invite parents to come to school on back to school night, parent conference night, and open house night to show them of the recordings and to solicit help from them and to motivate and inspire them to involve in their children's education.

The recording of my students' learning and engaging in science explorations and the showing of the recordings to parents will inspire and motivate their parents to be involved in their academic endeavor.

I believe that parents' involvement is the key to getting my students to graduate from high school and moving on to getting higher education in college and university, and to become productive contributors in the society.
