My Students

Our children dislike reading and that simple fact scares us. During a recent survey many of our 9th graders responded that they hate reading. We're confident that we can turn our students on to reading, but funding is a major challenge. Our school simply can not afford to buy ebook readers.

Our high school serves approximately 680 students in rural Eastern North Carolina.

67% of our student population is economically disadvantaged and qualifies for free and reduced lunch. The 25 students we are targeting are veterans of reading programs that focus on goals rather than the pleasure of reading for fun. As a result, they view reading as an assignment or task to be completed. We fear that once our kids leave school that they will stop reading completely. Our kids are great. They are very passionate and hard-working. We know that with enough guidance that they have the potential to develop into life-long learners who love to read for pleasure. We just need to introduce them to the right book at the right time.

My Project

We hope to introduce our kids to fun leisure reading by allowing them to read novels that they and their friends are actually interested in. To accomplish this, we plan to use the requested 6 Nook eBook Readers to deliver books that best match their interests. With the Nook, we are not limited to what is in the classroom or library. Instead, we can interview each student and then quickly download an eBook that matches their interests. The key to making reading fun for our kids is to give them what they want to read, when they want to read it. The Nook eBook Reader will allow us to accomplish that goal.

We know it's a terrible thing when kids tell a teacher that they hate reading.

We also know that it only takes one book, the right book, to completely change their view. Please help us nurture our children and foster a love for reading.
