Once Upon a Time in Second Grade...

My students need 45 different versions of a variety of different fairy tales, 36 people sticks, 22 blank hardcover books, crinkle strips, and craft paper.

I am a second grade teacher who loves literacy. Each and every day, my goal is to foster a love of literacy learning in my second graders as well. My class enjoys reading a variety of genres from our classroom library, but I have noticed that one area that we are lacking is in the fairy tale and folktale genres. I know my students and I know that they will be instantly hooked if I provide them with a new set of books that they can enjoy. I am hoping to inspire them to read a genre different from their usual choices!

Do you remember your favorite fairy tale? Chances are, you do. These books are memorable classics that children remember forever. I want to provide my children with a variety of different fairy tales so that they are able to experience these beloved classics. In addition to traditional favorites, children should be able to read some new "fractured fairy tales" that are out now, as well as fairy tales from other cultures, encouraging them to compare and contrast.

By having access to a wide variety of fairy tales, my children will be able to read and compare similar fairy tales. By having access to many fairy tales, my class will be able to act out some of these fairy tales with puppets that they will make. They will also use their new knowledge of elements of fairy tales to write their own fairy tales in the blank hardcover books.

You will make it possible for my students to have a memorable experience in literacy by providing them with wonderful literature that they will remember forever. They will also treasure the fairy tales that they will write in their hardcover books!
