Omnivore's Dilemma: Food Resources Around the World

My students need a class set of the Omnivore's Dilemma to read and discuss the current food situation in the United States. We will build a vertical garden to go with it.

My Students

There's always something new going on here at Energy. Students are really in charge of what they learn and produce through our project based learning. The reason we are trying to pursue this project is because students literally did not know what they were eating, and we want to find out.

The students at our school are all very curious.

They are very engineering oriented, but have all come from diverse backgrounds. Because of these traits, the students tend to be awesome at math, but do not have a true mastery of the other subjects, or even rather simple projects such as where the food they are eating comes from. Many were raised in families that do not have time or money to make healthy meals. The meals students crave are always the typical American fast food type: pizza, hamburgers, etc... These students are at a crucial point in their life where they can truly change the way they are eating. With a little help from teachers, students are presented with real life problems and are able to create solutions that impact their own lives and the community.

My Project

The Omnivore's Dilemma will be read and discussed by chapter in class to fully understand the way the United States currently mass produces food. This will be paired with two other project segments. The students will research other world regions to solve food problems in those areas and compare food consumption with our own food consumption in the United States. The students will then build a vertical garden with a pump that will allow herbs and a small collection of fruits and vegetables to grow. The students will be responsible for the growth and maintenance of this garden so that they are able to truly appreciate the food cycle. The Omnivore's Dilemma is a crucial part of this project. Without it, the students will not be able to fully understand why we care about the food cycle and why we would both to build a vertical garden.

At Energy, we really want to expose students to what they are eating and how to live a healthy lifestyle.

Every day, students walk in eating Hot Fries for breakfast and lots of candy and fast food at lunch. They are really bright students, but need some help learning how to eat! We hope that through our project which will be paired with a vertical garden project we will change the way students look at food and their own health.
