Oil Spill

My Students

My students live in the valley and don't understand what the effects of pollution, foreign substances, and oil spills do to our oceans and it's environment.

I have 105 pre-engineering students middle school students.

They are from various backgrounds and many have never been to the ocean. The students are eager to learn a variety subjects. The class is a project based STEM class where students learn by going through the engineering design process.

My Project

Students will use the engineering design process to clean up their oil spill. Students will take a paint tray, add sand and fauna to create a model beach and water life habitat. Then they will take salt water and add it to their beach/life area. The students will add dark olive oil to the water and move the tray back and forth, simulating waves. Their job is to clean their beach and ocean water area with a variety of materials to determine what works best. They need: gloves to not mix hand oils with water, medicine droppers and sponges to collect oil, and a scale to calculate the amount of oil removed. Students will problem solve and be creative in their oil spill clean-ups.

Donations will allow students to experience first hand the effects of the oil spill on their beach and help them develop ways to clean it up.

Students will gain an appreciation of the ocean habitat and understand the importance of keeping it clean.
