Oil Spill: What Can We Do?

My students need picture books, paint, pipettes, goggles, timers and beakers to learn about oil spills.

Mrs. McKibben Pickaway Elementary School
Circleville, OH Grades 3-5

My Students

My students see the effects of oil spills in the news and are asking questions. They are wondering "What causes an oil spill?" and "How much damage is there?". Living in the Midwest, they don't have much background knowledge about coastal areas. I want to help them understand and develop solutions.

My fourth grade students attend elementary school in a rural school district in Ohio.

Science is their favorite subject due to the hands-on nature of the class. These middle grade students are highly inquisitive and are becoming aware of events outside of their community. Many times they ask questions about items they have seen on the news or read about in the paper. These discussions lead to inquiry based explorations that not only help them to develop their scientific process skills, but also encourage creativity and problem solving. My science classes contain a wide variety of learners and learning styles. Providing hands-on activities allows me to help all students by seeing and experiencing science and not just reading about it in a textbook.

My Project

This project will allow the students to participate in an oil spill simulation. Because we don't live near a seashore, my students do not have a real understanding of what the environment is like. Through a series of labs the students will create a coastal model and then simulate an oil spill. They will work as Oil Spill Response Teams to design an experiment to test cleanup materials. The students will extend this understanding by looking at the specific effects on the animals involved in the oil spill. Books and video clips will provide further information. The next step will be to explore the power of inventions. They will research inventions which have helped our environment and do some inventing of their own. The students will synthesize their learning by creating a product that will help to prevent oil spills from happening in the future. The students will design and present their ideas to help both coastal habitats and the organisms that live there.

Powerful science lessons provide opportunities for inquiry and further exploration.

The oil spill simulation and invention lab will allow my fourth graders to build understanding of an environmental disaster and to develop solutions. During the unit students will be conducting experiments, collecting data, researching, and communicating. Your support of our project can help to inspire my students to take a proactive approach to environmental issues both in our community and outside of our region.
