Oh, Snap!

My students need 2 digital cameras for small group photograph lessons.

My Students

A picture is worth a thousand words (especially when it comes from the mouth of a teen)! Taking a photograph is a way to visually communicate a story or an emotion. I would like to teach my students ways they can communicate through the lens of a digital camera.

Our junior high students are creative.

They set high academic standards for themselves and value achievement. Our school houses grades kindergarten through eight and is set in a suburban / urban area. There are approximately one hundred students per grade.

My Project

We have a limited budget, and technology is the last thing to be considered. Often it doesn't reach the visual arts classroom. With these two digital cameras, I can assign small groups to snap pictures of their environment, common objects, and each other - in search of the emotion the subject evokes. I plan to teach the technical aspects of digital photography with the cameras. These are skills that students will use in their ever-changing technology-driven world.

Without these cameras, I will not be able to teach photography as a part of my curriculum.

Students need to know that art is current. Art is relevant. Art is something they will use in the future. If they realize that photography is art and is current, the students might realize the impact visual communication has on their lives and careers.
