Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Living in Atlanta my students rarely get to experience the ocean, and celebrate its majesty.
Students at my school may not have much money, but they are eager to learn.
The school I work at has a ninety percent free or reduced lunch. This metric along with others qualifies our school for Title I status, based on its economically disadvantaged population. Despite these challenges, the students at our school are often outperforming other neighboring schools. Our students find learning most fun when it is hands on, and that is why I make this request to you today.
My Project
I have requested materials to build a model of the ocean floor. We will have students work together collaboratively to identify features of significance. They will use markers to label them and describe them with their writing abilities. They will then use what they have learned to write a fiction story involving a journey along the ocean floor. We will use technology at the school to record them presenting the stories for viewing, reflection and assessment.
The topography of the ocean floor is an experience to behold.
My students live inland, and this will provide them an opportunity to truly understand more about the ocean. This project is important in providing knowledge that will likely be increasingly vital in a growing body of career opportunities in coming decades. This is because human beings are increasingly looking to the oceans for resources and transportation. This project will, simply put, provide a fun way for students to learn.
