My Students

Do you remember the first time you switched from "learning to read" to "reading to learn?" My class has begun to make that exciting transition this year.

My students have made tremendous strides in reading this year.

They have taken the initiative to read more nonfiction books to learn about space, animals, people's lives, and even history. They just recently finished a unit on the civil rights movement where they researched famous civil rights leaders and events and then created a newspaper article using their research. They are increasingly interested in the world around them and are now enjoying reading to learn!

My Project

Through using a class set of the chapter book Number the Stars, my 4th graders can learn about the history of World War II in an age-appropriate manner. The author of the book, Lois Lowry, has a unique way of incorporating cliff hangers and suspense in her historical fiction book that makes it a book you will never want to put down. The book is a door to open more discussions about the topic of World War II and is a memorable way to learn about it. I am requesting a class set of Number the Stars.

Our students will be forever grateful for your help in providing this historical, literature-based experience.

This book was a favorite of mine growing up and now, as a teacher, I want to allow my very own students to have that same impact from reading Number the Stars.
