Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever learned how to make an artistic product to use as a fundraising item? Please help my students acquire the friendship bracelet making skill and opportunity to sell "theirœthreads of hope" for a cause. They will help the children in rural South Africa have a better education.

I work in a public primary school in a mainly Hispanic community in NYC.

The school has a large ELL population, with many students coming from areas where Spanish is the primary language. As a result, many students are isolated by the language barrier. In addition, my students struggle economically, almost all living at and well below the poverty level. Crime, domestic violence and substance abuse are rampant throughout the neighborhood, leaving many of the children with threatening and unsafe home and community environments. For many, school is a last sanctuary of calm and comfort. Unfortunately, NYC does not consider art to be a high priority subject. As a result, I teach over 550 students per week with very few supplies. The true tragedy is that for many of my students, art is one of the few releases and avenues of expression open to them. Given the intense pressure and sense of powerlessness under which they live their day-to-day lives, having no art often means having no voice.

My Project

Ntataise is Swahili- it means to lead a child by the hand.It is also an NGO founded in South Africa to help early childhood development in poor, rural areas of South Africa. The requested books and embroidery threads will allow my art and LKR students the opportunity to gain many important life skills as they work towards helping NGO Ntataise. They will use the colorful array of threads and make unique friendship bracelets. As they intertwine the colorful threads, they will discuss concepts of friendship, empathy and much more. They will be proactive in helping to provide others with a better education. This forum of friendship will produce an artistic handmade bracelet which will be offered as a fundraising item. The money raised will be given to the NGO Ntataise for the purchase of books, art materials and some toys for their toy library. This project will offer my students the opportunity to help others in greater need - transforming all their lives through artistic education.

Your support will provide the books, materials and opportunity to make an artistic product to sell as a way to fund raise for a cause they are drawn to.They will learn more about S.Africa.

They will work as a community to offer children of rural South Africa much needed books, art materials and a toy loaning library. They will learn these skills, and feel the joys of offering their talent and skill for the betterment of others. It will provide an artistic outreach for positive change. Ntataise!
