Novice Natives in Need of Documentary Devices

My students need portable video equipment, such as iPods and a camcorder, to share their stories as they create documentaries about their families and homelands they are native to.

My Students

Help us tell our stories! Many of us were born thousands of miles away from were we live and attend school. Too often, our families move around frequently, keeping us fed by following the jobs, giving us little time for our teachers and friends to get to know us.

Who are we?

We are third, fourth and fifth graders, attending a rural public school of over six hundred elementary students. Eighty percent of us live in poverty. Many of us attend school here in the United States, having left most of our families far away in places like El Salvador and the Marshall Islands. Some of us haven't seen our parents in years. Sometimes, we forget what it was like where our families came from, although we have unique traditions and celebrations that are worth sharing with the rest of the world. We want to know more about our roots and be able to share that knowledge with you!

My Project

With your help, these boys and girls will be able to take home portable video equipment to document celebrations and routines and conduct interviews in their homes and in their neighborhoods. They will follow their families around, documenting their lives. Each ipod touch and flip camera will provide a more efficient means for these young people to create. Giving them use of this technology gives them a more fair advantage in our ever-changing world. Many of our parents have to take our students to the technology, in places such as public libraries and school. A difficult feat for households where many parents or caretakers work alternating shifts. With your help, we can take the technology to them! What a unique way to learn geography and writing skills through real-world application, as students prepare to learn about themselves and share that knowledge with each other and the community in a multicultural film festival.

Do you remember what it was like being the new kid in school?

Imagine being the new kid in school four times in the same school year, never really getting to know anyone, and no-one really getting the chance to know the real you. Research says that when students and their families are able to establish strong ties with their school and community, they are more likely to stay at that school at almost any cost! All of these kids have an amazing story to tell. Please help them tell it!
