My students need authentic art materials such as wire and glaze that will enhance their creativity, risk-taking, and artistic process this year in the art studio.
Help!! I can't let my students graduate elementary school without experiencing the power of an exciting and quality art education. We need your help getting the kinds of art materials that will inspire a generation of art enthusiasts.
My art students are a diverse group of 350 learners ranging from ages 3 to 11.
Our District of Columbia public school is home to students who may never have seen, touched, or smelled an art material such as clay before, to those who've attended summer art camp since they were three. No matter their level of experience, all students are thirsty for more exposure to the arts, especially in a meaningful and authentic way.
My Project
The sky's the limit when it comes to quality art materials! How about manipulating wire with pliers and bending continuous lines into abstract self-portraits like sculptor, Alexander Calder? Or rubber blocks for carving to create multiple prints like pop artist, Andy Warhol? Or speckle-glazes for experimenting with surface textures on clay? Exposing students to the fine arts through quality materials means allowing students to feel that their ideas and creations hold value. My students need authentic art materials that will enhance their creativity, risk-taking, and artistic process this year in the art studio.
Many DC public schools do not have the funding to support art classes.
The school I teach at places a high value on art education and it is my goal to make sure the rare opportunity I have to expose children to the arts is not wasted. It is my goal to provide authentic art experiences for my students by using real materials in a studio setting. I hope the exposure to ceramics allows each student to feel successful and contributes to their desire to be lifelong learners and creative citizens
