Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"A person's a person no matter how small!" ~Dr. Seuss
This is the motto in my kindergarten classroom.
We operate on a system of respect and responsibility.
My four and five year olds learn how to treat each other and that they are responsible for their actions. With the huge demands that are placed on my students as learners, we have to remember that they are still so young. We have to shape their character and teach them right from wrong. Our school is very diverse and provides my students with a lot of opportunities for growth. They are able to interact with students of all ages, with our building being pre-k to grade 8. With this being the first school experience for many of my students, learning has to be fun to keep them engaged! Each student also learns differently, which means that all material is presented in multiple ways to ensure learning success for all!
My Project
This is where you can help...
The new Common Core curriculum has a heavy focus on non-fiction texts. One of our school goals is also to increase exposure for our students to these non-fiction readings. The Scholastic Let's Find Out: Kindergarten magazine subscription is an excellent way to introduce non-fiction at the kindergarten level. It is also a great way to make cross curriculum connections to science and social studies topics. This source is extremely student-friendly and attractive to young students. They feel very "grown up" when they get to read magazines.
Providing my students with early exposure to non-fiction readings will help nurture a love of reading with the ultimate goal of closing the achievement gap.
These resources will allow for an opportunity to instill a love for science and social studies in my young readers. Help foster a love for non-fiction reading!
