This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you been in a situation where you begin to feel desperate because the heat? Well during the summer, my students have to spend 5 to 6 hours everyday in a classroom where the thermometer can reach a temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.

100% of my students are Hispanic and attend a public school in Colorado built in 1962.

The school is located in a very low income neighborhood, where the families don't have certain basic appliances at home, such as an air conditioner. My students come to school and they face the same problem. They have to study and learn under extreme heat conditions because our school doesn't have ceiling fans or air conditioners. We the teachers try to remedy this situation as much as possible, but even with 3 or 4 portable fans, the heat is intolerable during summer days. Because of the economy and the budget cuts for education each year, our district cannot afford the installation of air conditioners in schools and every summer, we have to deal with sleepy kids, nose bleeds, some fainting, and difficulty concentrating, for both students and teachers.

My Project

An air conditioner would be of great benefit to my students. We wouldn't need to worry about students fainting, or struggling to concentrate due to the heat. The classroom would also experience less noise, as an air conditioner would allow us to remove the two noisy fans from the classroom. My students would be able to concentrate on learning instead of focusing on the heat.

Some of my colleagues have the privilege of a portable air conditioner in their classrooms and I can see the positive attitude of their students as well as enthusiasm and high energy all day.

With an air conditioner in my classroom, I am sure my students will be more focused on learning and they will be less distracted than those who feel sleepy, tired or lazy because of the insupportable heat in the classroom.
