My Students

Children love nature. They love to get their hands dirty and play in the mud. They are curious about the world around them. Because of this, one of my favorite days of the year is Earth Day. Sadly, last year I learned that we could no longer do one of my favorite projects!

I teach first grade in an urban charter school in Pennsylvania.

Our school mission is to provide an environment where students not only succeed academically, but where they also learn how to be effective members of their community. Many of our students come from low income families. We are a full inclusion school with a high percentage of students with special needs.

My Project

Recently, my class was moved to a room without windows. I was disappointed that we wouldn't have windows for many reasons. I believe that natural light enhances a student's ability to learn. Unfortunately, there was nothing we could do. We learned to take some of our lessons outside on nice days so we could get a little extra Vitamin D. Each year that I've taught, I've planned an extravagant day with lots of fun and activities for Earth Day. One of these activities is for each child to plant a flower. Over the next few weeks, the students take care of their flowers. They take them home for Mother's Day every year and give it to a woman in their life that they care about. Last year, that almost didn't happen. We planted our seeds and they began to grow. However, without natural sunlight in the classroom, they began to turn white and die. In order to do this project this year, we will need a Plant Light House where we can keep the plants as they grow.

Having a Plant Light House to house our Earth/Mother's Day plants will help the children learn about plants, how they grow, and what they need to survive.

This Plant Light House will also allow each of my students to share their love with an important woman in their life.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
