No Such Thing as Too Much Glue!!

My students need 17 art supplies, such as such paint brushes, craft materials and paint.

Hello! I teach kindergarten at a school with a highly mobile military base. The students in my class often come from multiple children families with only one working parent. The working parent is often deployed overseas and the only parent the child has to rely upon is not self- sufficient. Some, but not all, of my students often lack the self esteem necessary to actively participate in classroom activities and art is the one area they are able to express themselves in without any worries of not meeting any required expectations. Kindergarten should be fun!

Many of my students are only with me for a few months before moving on. I often get students who have moved so much during the year that I am their third or fourth kindergarten teacher. We do not receive classroom supply money and any additional supplies needed are bought by the teachers, borrowed from other teachers, or donated by a few parents. The students are often behind due to all of the military moves. When we do art projects, the students really shine. I like to give the kids the necessary supplies and see what they can do with them. Imagination is something many of them don't use very often and art without restrictions is a new world to some. I often keep art work art work samples from different times throughout the year and compare the growth. Amazing!!

By having paint, paint brushes, glitter glue and many other types of art supplies, they are able to express themselves and let their imagination run free. One of the first art projects we do is self portraits. The students can draw, paint, or create themselves in any way they want. We keep these and repeat the project several times throughout the year and the growth is always a wonderful surprise. The students are always amazed at how much more "talent" they have at the end of the year when they compare their self portraits and are very proud of their works of art. I always remind them that in art there is no right or wrong. They only have to be themselves and that they have enough glue to make it stick!

By having the art supplies available to allow the students to express themselves creatively, they can begin to let down their guard and have fun. Yes they might not be the best readers, or know how to write their names quite right, but the picture of the rainbow they just painted is a work of art! And, the cotton balls they glued on for clouds are not about to fall off because - there is no such thing as too much glue!!
