My Students

Do you remember what is was like to struggle through the Shakespeare play or classic novel that you were required to read in school? My students sure do! My students often get hung up on the language in the novels that we read in class.

Approximately 1,600 students attend our high school in grades nine through twelve.

We are the only public high school in the county and we serve a wide variety of students. I teach tenth grade students in a non-honors setting. Many are on target with the reading and writing level of their grade, but they struggle with the language and word choice of many of the authors that we study.

My Project

"No Fear Shakespeare puts Shakespeare's language side-by-side with a facing-page translation into modern English the kind of English people actually speak today." I am requesting 40 copies of No Fear Shakespeare: A Midsummer Night's Dream. Not only will my students be able to have access to the the classical version, but they will be able to read it alongside the modern version, in their language! This will help my students with reading comprehension, critical thinking skills, and vocabulary development. It also allows the students to understand that language is constantly evolving as they can read Shakespeare's original words and comprehend what they mean in their own language of today. This text makes "The Bard" accessible to all students.

This text will allow me to make this Shakespearean classic accessible to all my students.

They will develop an appreciation for Shakespeare as we well as their own language. I feel that having this literary opportunity will be a great experience for my students.
