This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"A rose by any other name would smell as sweet." Freshman traditionally read Shakespeare's Romeo an Juliet, but my students are mostly English learners who struggle to understand the original text. No Fear Shakespeare gives both the original and a simplified translation to help students.

My students live in a poor community in Southern California.

They have developed a love of reading and are excited to read "Romeo and Juliet." But, most of the students in the class are English learners who will struggle with reading grade level texts, let alone Shakespeare.

My Project

Exposing students to classic literature is foundational to a well-rounded education. And nothing is more classic than the works of Shakespeare. I have taught Shakespeare's sonnets with these students, but they don't comprehend. I would have to explain line by line, word by word what he meant, which made the poem less enjoyable for them. The "No Fear Shakespeare" gives the students the original text with a modern plain English version on the facing page. The students will gain deeper understanding and appreciation for Shakespeare's writing, which will help prepare them for college.

These students are so excited to read "Romeo and Juliet" and I worry that only reading the original text will discourage them because the language is so challenging.

The No Fear Shakespeare will let them discover the beauty of Shakespeare's writing while allowing them the comfort of a modern translation.
