New Year, New Organic Garden

My students need 15 pairs of work gloves, 4 rolls of fencing to keep out small animals, and 10 rolls of rubberized mulch walkway for our organic gardening project.

My Students

My classes last year started an organic garden and enjoyed being able to grow their own fruits and vegetables, however the garden became overgrown with weeds over the summer. This year's classes are looking forward to rebuilding and regrowing the garden but we need supplies to do this.

Everyone knows that organically grown food tastes better, but did you know that there are many more environmental benefits to organic gardening?

To name just a few, organic gardening helps to reduce topsoil erosion, conserves water, and stops environmental pollution from potentially dangerous chemicals and fertilizers. This is particularly important in our area as our school has helped to found a protected FL scrub habitat surrounding our school property. I teach science to grades 3-5 in a predominantly low-income school, and we are working with a local garden club to start a joint school and community organic garden on our campus.

My Project

As we are in a low-income area, students at our school do not often have the opportunity to have fresh fruits and vegetables at home. We also have many students faced with the problems associated with childhood obesity. Our organic gardening project will enable students to learn how to grow their own fruits and vegetables in an environmentally-friendly way. They will also reap health benefits from the physical activity required in the preparing and growing of an organic garden. However in order to complete our gardening project, we need work gloves to protect the students' hands, poultry fencing to keep rabbits and other animals from eating what we grow, and a rubber mulch walkway so that students can work in the garden without stepping on the plants. We have found a rubber mulch pathway product made of recycled tires, and feel that this would be more cost effective in the long run rather than buying a truckload of wood mulch to use on pathways each year.

Thank you for considering donating to our organic gardening project.

Your contribution will do much to increase students' awareness of the importance of organic food production to our environment as well as reinforce essential science, health, and nutrition concepts.
