My Students

We are a Title I school district in need of a working piano for three choirs and other music classes. The piano tuner himself does not think the one we have now is worth fixing. A digital piano will eliminate tuning expenses and allow us to instruct our students accordingly.

I have a diverse group of 9th -12th grade students.

Most come from low and middle income homes. Some students come from different districts to study music in our program as well. They are creative, fun, and sometimes a little crazy. I have three choir groups who perform throughout the year. My select group performs at community events and at senior citizen centers. The school is very active in reaching out to the community, and the students have lots of school spirit. All you have to do is go to one of their pep rallies to see it. The teachers are caring and the administration is very supportive. For so many of these students, music class is the best part of their day. The students create a special bond with each other as musicians and singers. This helps to nurture their love for music and to pass it on to future generations. In the end, quality tools are "instrumental" to the success of our music program.

My Project

The addition of a new piano will dramatically improve our choir rehearsals. I use it to accompany the students during warm-ups and to learn new music. The piano is the center piece of any choral class. Not only will I be able to use the piano for rehearsal, but the students love to play it as well. I often have students come to my class during lunch or after school to practice on it. The students will also be able to take advantage of the special features a digital piano offers including a 128 sound feature and the ability to record. These pianos can also be used with special recording software enabling students to use current technology. Moreover, a digital piano does not require tuning, therefore saving budget dollars. Since this piano is lighter, we can also easily transport it to other locations for special performances and rehearsals.

Having a new piano in my classroom will ensure that my choir hears notes that are in tune!

This will greatly help their singing and listening skills. When the students sing well, they will take pride in their performance and will want to share that experience with others. Students who play piano will be able to practice on a quality instrument that will inspire them to practice more. Students who are creative will be able to experiment with the variety of options the digital piano offers.
