My Students

We're a small public elementary school with over 80% from low income households. Funding often limits access to resources and important opportunities. Yet, my 5th Grade students have excelled despite these hardships. Our students' Academic Performance Index for last spring test was over 800.

Walking around the outside of our school you will see rundown buildings, police cars, tagging, and drugs.

When you walk in the building you see a caring community with rigorous teaching and learning. Students run their computer lab and have opened an art gallery that showcases the creativity we have running through our school. The 5th grade students are the big brothers and the sisters of the school. Most have been with us since their preschool days. Because of this, they are not just classmates, they are family. We fight like a family and love like one too. There are the students who may say they hate school, but they are the ones that get themselves to school on their own daily. In our class we work very hard daily regardless of the hurdles that try to stop us on a daily basis. We don't make excuses for ourselves, we just grow stronger.

My Project

Through multi-media projects, my class has mastered a range of technology skills. They have created PowerPoint slideshows reviewing books read in class, recorded digital interviews of school staff and community leaders, shot digital photo-stories to produce compelling and creative works. Although their talents and creativity are unbounded, they are nevertheless hindered by limited access to computers and slow performance of our aging PCs. With 4 laptops for group-use, we can take a giant leap forward and begin more ambitious New Media activities, produce higher-quality work, and undertake a wider range of academic and imaginative assignments. My 5th graders are hard working and deserve a competitive, world-class education, starting with proper classroom equipment and updated technology tools.

Everyday it is my job to make students want to learn by making it fun and showing them the importance.

The world we live in now changes at a fast pace due to technology. I need my students to understand all the possibilities there are with computers. We teach our students reading, writing and math, but we leave out technology. I would be doing my students a disservice by not incorporating computer skills wherever I can.
