Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My first graders are bright students who are eager to learn. Some of them are performing at grade level and some just need a little extra push and extra time to learn the crucial reading skills that are taught in the first grade.

My students come from working class families.

Our entire school is Title I, which means that most of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Their parents work hard and may not have the time to read to their children every evening. My students need new books they can read in the classroom.

My Project

There are 24 students in my first grade class this year, and it is nearly impossible to sit and read with each student every day. Most of the reading we do in class is choral reading, whether it be reading the directions in our workbook or reading a story in our anthology. We always read together. My students also have the option of reading alone during IWT (Independent Work Time). This is a time when I can focus on those students who need additional support. My emergent readers can read on their own and use the requested books on CD for encouragement and enjoyment.

Thanks to generous donations through Donors Choose, my students received a CD listening center last week.

Now we just need the books to bring it all together. Nothing would be worse than letting the brand new listening center sit in the corner of our classroom, unused because of lack of appropriate books.
