My Students
Imagine listening to music with the bass turned all the way down. It sounds off-balance, doesn't it? That's exactly what our band deals with every day! We don't have enough low instruments for our students to learn to play. We are working hard to build up this essential section to gain BALANCE!!
There are over 800 students in our middle school and we have great cultural diversity.
It is a Title I school with over 70% of our students eligible for free or reduced lunch; yet there is not much of a budget for buying new instruments. Within our school there is a smaller academy consisting of about 100 students called the 'Goddard Scholars'. This is my band. These students are college-bound and amaze me every day with how hard working and talented they are! They dive right in to every challenge presented to them with determination and a smile on their face - a constant inspiration!
My Project
This student-model tenor saxophone is a perfect way to start our collection of lower-sounding instruments. The quality of instruments is essential for these students to feel successful! What if you practiced and tried your best yet never seemed to get better due to problems with your equipment/instrument? It is very frustrating and discouraging! What's the point in trying if you know it's not going to work correctly? My students have such optimism and a great work ethic, it would be a tragedy to lose them due to lack of money and quality instruments.
As every instrument in our band ages, we need new ones to replace them!
