Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
With the explosion of social media apps and programs it seems youth are beginning to think cameras are only good for selfies. At ASTEC, our kids are incredibly artistic and love expressing their creativity. My desire is for them to have the opportunity to truly experience the art of photography.
ASTEC students are given an environment which is designed to empower them.
The high standards set at ASTEC leads to students who know what is expected of them, and strive to meet them. I believe we have some of the best students in Oklahoma.
ASTEC Charter Schools is located in central Oklahoma City. We have a fairly diverse student body with a poverty rate near 98%. Our school is the first start-up charter school in Oklahoma and for the last 13 years been striving to provided a well-rounded education for our students. From the state mandated maths, sciences, and languages to the just as important art, music, and technology we have the pleasure of exposing our students to it all.
My Project
My creative students have a strong desire to learn photography, but currently my photography class has only one DSLR and a bunch of older point and shoots that don"t allow for the changing of ISO, shutter speed, aperture. With these new cameras my students will gain more opportunity to learn the basic functions and techniques of photography, while expressing the beauty of the world from their own perspective.
Although three DSLRs for a class of 20 students is still not ideal, it's a start the my students and I are more than happy to take.
By having the additional cameras I would be able to demonstrate that which I am teaching while the students are taking turns applying the concepts being taught. In additions, we'll be able to get through the curriculum much quicker and group projects would be less of a headache.
