Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Changing a tire with a hammer will not get the job done! Same goes for gardening, the right tools make a garden possible!

Students in our community are disproportionately overweight and at risk for diseases caused by obesity.

The school garden will be valuable tool in which to discuss nutrition with students and families. We plan to have a curriculum designed for each grade level as well as parent classes focusing on gardening and nutrition. We hope to have parents be involved in planting, maintaining, and harvesting.

My Project

A school garden builds community and learning in the minds of students and families. Students are able to use hands on learning experiences to encourage teamwork, to learn about science, and to further their knowledge about health and nutrition. With these hoes, shovels, rakes, they are able to see the cycle of plant life and learn where their food comes from. Through landscaping and garden design students will use the visual arts to create a space that works is both aesthetically pleasing as well as functional. The garden will be located close to the playground that is used 7 days a week by the community. Our students will take pride in contributing to the growth and maintenance of the garden that will be seen by the whole community.

They will be able to educate their parents on healthy eating. Combat obesity first hand. What seems like a simple project, has a life time effect on an entire community!
