Native Garden Field Microscopes

My students need 30 field microscopes to observe and examine the plants and insect life in our school's new native plant garden.

My Students

"There's naught as nice as th' smell o' good clean earth, except th' smell o' fresh growin' things when th' rain falls on 'em." So says Dickon, the nature-loving Yorkshire lad from Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden. I hope my students will soon share a similar sentiment.

My students are city kids.

They don't have much when it comes to material goods. Fancy clothes, iPads, and family trips to Disney World are not a reality for these students. But I'll let you in on a little secret...these kids are smart. When given the right opportunities and a chance to prove themselves, they can compete academically with students from "the other side of the tracks." This isn't wishful thinking. I see it happening every day.

My Project

My students are in the middle of a big project, creating a native plant garden. The garden is 15' x 50' and will soon feature 31 species of shrubs and wildflowers native to our region of the country. The use of native plants will serve two purposes for our students. First, it will give them an opportunity to study plants that grow in our region. Most of our students spend little time out of their neighborhoods and have no experience with plants found in the surrounding countryside. Second, the native garden will attract many insect species that use the plants as food sources and breeding grounds. The field microscopes I am asking for will be used to study the fine details of both plants and insects, giving students a better understanding of natural structures and life cycles.

The students have been given their "bit of earth," just as Mary Lennox was in The Secret Garden.

Now let's give them the opportunity to watch their garden grow with a class set of field microscopes.
