Academic, life challenges & lack of school resources all impact student achievement. Our school goal is to provide intervention to narrow learning gaps & challenge students. To do this we need access to resources to that will allow us to individualize instruction & produce 21st Century Learners.
The students for whom this project will benefit are from one of the least-funded districts in our state.
This is an old mill town with a high unemployment rate. Each class services a wide variety of academic abilities. While many of us feel adept at providing differentiated instruction to meet the diverse needs of our inner city students, we do not have access to current Technology in most classrooms. Our grade level teachers collaborate very closely to provide the best academic experiences possible for all learners. Additionally, there is a strong emphasis on cross grade collaboration to ensure students are being adequately prepared for the next level. After numerous hours of collaboration we have decided to pursue funding for Chromebooks for our students. In the meantime, teachers in our building have already begun working together to create differentiated curriculum based activities in Google. Teachers & students are excited by the potential of using Chromebooks in our school!
My Project
Chromebooks are a tool that can be used to support 21st Century Learning Skills, provide intervention & activities to challenge students. They will allow students to participate in individualized curriculum activities based on their specific needs. They will offer students the opportunity to utilize 21st Century Tools to support & enhance learning. One tool is Google Drawings. It will be used to create content based activities that can easily be modified & adapted to meet student needs. Screencastify can be used for students to record themselves explaining their work & thinking. Other tools include interactive programs to target reading comprehension & fluency, audiobooks, lesson videos on recent lessons they may have missed, online graphic organizers for students to aid in comprehension and math practice that is aligned with common core. These are just some of the many different ways that individualized 21st Century learning opportunities can be provided to students.
Instruction will improve with Chromebooks by allowing areas of need to be targeted in new ways.
They will allow for the capturing of data that can’t be captured without the use of Tech. Such data will drive instruction, allow for personalized learning & close the achievement gap. We believe with the use of Technology students are more motivated & self driven which leads to improved skills, a higher self esteem & an increased excitement for their own learning.
