My Students with Autism Need Fun Ways to Learn Money

My students need coins, money software and a fun game to enhance their learning. These materials will help me reach all my students in a fun but productive way.

My Students

Imagine having special needs and struggling with the "traditional" teaching methods/materials that are in your classroom. Using a variety of teaching materials ensures that I can reach all my students. Money skills is so vital to their future. I want to be sure they have a solid understanding.

My students have moderate to severe autism.

Don't let the title of "autism" downplay their intelligence. My students are extremely bright but need to be taught with materials that are different than a "traditional" classroom. They have a lot to offer and I learn from them every day. They teach me to think outside the box and think of things differently. When planning a lesson, I try to use a variety of materials so I am sure to get the interest of all my students. One may be excited by a worksheet, another by a computer program. That is why these materials are so important to my classroom. These materials will help my current children and many more for years to come.

My Project

Imagine walking into a store and not knowing how to pay for something. How would you survive? These aren't just fun materials that will enhance learning. They are materials that are absolutely vital to their success. I am requesting a coin kit to be used in a variety of ways, TouchMoney Software and a TouchMoney game. TouchMoney has been a vital tool to teaching children with special needs. I have tried to create fun projects and activities but know that these materials would be motivating and fun for my students. I can teach the basic money skills in small groups and then use these materials for centers in our room. My students love to learn and will actually pick items similar to this as a reward. I love to watch their face as they get to play a fun game or work toward playing an educational computer game.

I get to see the impact teaching in a variety of ways can make to a child. It can be the one method of learning that inspires them to learn more. What was your favorite method of learning? Did you enjoy games with your peers or on the computer or did you just prefer a worksheet? I don't know many that would pick the worksheet. Please help me give my students the same benefits.
