My Reed Is Broken, My Valves Are Stuck

My Students

How frustrating is it when you are learning to play a band instrument and you do not have the basic supplies needed like reeds and valve oil. Many of my students, 70% of whom live at or below the poverty level, borrow school instruments and cannot afford to buy reeds or valve oil.

My students are primarily from a very low socioeconomic background.

70% of my students and families receive free or reduced cost lunch. This has allowed us to help students academically especially as we are a Title I school. At our school we strive to provide our students with the highest quality instruction, especially in the performing arts. However, over the past few years funding has been an issue, not only state-wide here in Maine, but on a national level as well. With recent budget freezes and flat funding formulas, financial commitment for arts projects is the first to vanish. Regardless of the lack in funding, my students love music and love to perform. We are hoping to drum up support for our program through the generosity of others outside our community. Budgets are tight, even for the smallest items.

My Project

These resources, reeds and oils, would be available to all students in the band free of charge. I've had students in the past not come to their lesson or band because they were embarrassed because they cannot afford to buy even one reed or their values were sticking and the students were tired of asking others for their oil. Please help our program to continue to grow by taking care of the basic needs of my students.
