I wish I knew then what I know now about food. I hope my students can save their wish for something else.
Our school is the only residential Special Act public school district on Long Island.
Constructed on a boarding school model, the students live in cottages at the campus. The New York State Department of Family Assistance has licensed our school as a residential treatment center.
The students reside in cottages on the campus in living groups based on their age, sex, developmental needs and individualized treatment goals. Counseling and psychotherapy are provided to every student.
Students are referred to the school by other local schools in New York State, through their Committee on Special Education (CSE). The classes are designed to focus on the particular educational deficit of each child.
My Project
I am requesting a My Plate display for a visual manipulative for my students. Students take more in when they can manipulate the tools they're given and I'm planning to make this valuable food lesson stick with them. My students need to know the benefits of good foods for their health and what those good foods look like. They also need to see what their options for good choices are.
This project is so important because my students truly need tactile and visual materials to help make this lesson penetrate.
With your help, we can help students make better choices for food for the rest of their lives.
