My students need 18 headphones for both their independent reading work and for the listening center, supplies, and books on CD for our listening center.
My classroom is a busy place! Over the course of a literacy class period, my students work independently, cooperatively, and in teacher-guided small groups. They love, love, love to listen to and read along with books; which helps build their reading confidence!
I teach an amazing group of students; Kindergarten is so much fun!
Because I spend so much time working with them in small groups, I get a chance to learn a lot about who my students are as people and learners. Although our school stands out from many because it is a Sage school and 75.4% of the students are low-income or English Language Learners, in many ways, my class is the same as every classroom in every school in America. I have high achievers and low achievers. I have auditory learners and kinesthetic learners. I have ELLs with limited English proficiency and high achieving students. This wide range of preferences is the reason why am very committed to providing a classroom experience that meets the needs of each learner whenever I can. I know what happens in my classroom does not always resemble what many people would imagine the perfect class to be, but it works for me. More importantly, it works for my students!
My Project
My classroom has a boombox for a listening center, but nothing else! We are a new classroom, and it's the beginning of my second year teaching Kindergarten, so we have very minimal resources. My students are in need of headphones for Daily 5 listening and reading activities, which is the literacy method we use in our district. Headphones are something that many of my students cannot afford to bring to school. While I work with a small group of students, the independent students will choose a Daily 5 choice without interrupting the teacher's small group lesson. These supplies will be used throughout my literacy block for reading to self, listening to reading, as well as during many open ended listening times, such as free choice. Through these resources they will acquire skills necessary for reading and building upon their reading successes!
These supplies will help my students fall in love with reading!
The more children are exposed to books, the greater their chances of reading success. It is my vision that this extra exposure to books will help my students build reading confidence that will follow them throughout their school lives!
