This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

It is clear that our students obtain their 21st Century skills at school, and we need more technology available to students to make lessons interactive.

My school is committed to preparing students for success by developing high achieving students who engage in and contribute to culturally diverse communities.

All students will have the skills they need to connect, collaborate, and compete in an interdependent world. We are a group of 400 kindergarten-fifth grade students who are becoming globally competent and college ready. A full 97% of the students live in poverty, receive free and/or reduced lunch, and fewer than 85% have a computer connected to the Internet. We live in a city that is mile above sea level and would like to engage in technology that is a mile above the rest of our education. To accomplish this we need to expand our horizons by utilizing interactive technology items like heart rate monitors in our PE classroom during every lesson.

My Project

It's not a secret that the current generation of students is facing a crisis when it comes to obesity. As their physical education teacher, I feel that it's my responsibility to make sure they understand the importance of exercise and that they are motivated to get active and stay active. Monitoring your heart rate during exercise has been proved to be the most effective measure of physical exertion. By using the heart rate monitors during class, the students will be able to self-assess their effort during the activity as well as track their progress throughout the class. Immediate and accurate data is essential to motivation, and being able to track their progress will help with long-term success rates in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

One common thread that all of my students share is their need for a comprehensive fitness program.

With the rise of obesity and other weight-related disorders, physical fitness is a necessity for living a healthy and long life.
