My Students

Remember singing the Itsy Bitsy Spider when you were a child? Designed to enhance the educational opportunities offered to children at our school, this will provide additional opportunities in the arts and still build on basic skills being taught everyday in our schools and classrooms.

My school has close to 800 students in grades Kindergarten -4th.

We are a Title I school based on the number of students who receive free and reduced lunch. This means that our community has difficulty assisting with the funding of projects that our teachers could use. We do not have fundraisers because we do not feel comfortable taxing members of students' families. I teach general music and meet with each class once a week for 30 minutes. During that time we sing, dance, play on instruments, prepare for musicals and various other activities. I also try to work across the curriculum and integrate reading and math as much as possible to assist classroom teachers. At our school we work together as a team to promote student learning.

My Project

A listening center complete with a CD player, kid sized earphones and a jack all stored in one container for organization will allow up to 6 students to listen to the same song/story at the same time. I have also selected several books and CDs that tell a story through song. When the students are then provided with felt puppets and a story board they can reinforce what they have heard by recreating the stories with the manipulatives. They can also retell the story giving new endings or by introducing new characters. This allows their imaginations to grow.

I am hoping to put creative resources into the hands of my students that allows music and literacy learning as well as the chance to explore stories through various methods of learning.

These above and beyond resources will enhance the hard work work of the teachers at our school.
