This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the feeling of satisfaction when you finally solved a complex algebra problem and something clicked? Please help give my students the tools to deal more quickly with abstract mathematical concepts.

I work in the poorest congressional district in the country and many of my students dislike math, because they find it frustrating and incomprehensible.

The more time I spend with them, the more it becomes clear to me that this frustration is the result of a very basic lack of number sense and basic operational skills. A large percentage of my students enter the sixth grade far below grade level in mathematics and often lacking basic computational skills. This year, my school has instituted a basic skills math program to reinforce number sense and help our students become faster at basic calculations. My students love this time and work hard at it, because they can easily see and monitor their success as they move from easier to more complex operations.

My Project

Right now, my students struggle to understand algebra, because they become bogged down in messy math calculations. We have some calculators, but it is frustrating when they are slowed down because they have to share. I am requesting 10 scientific calculators to help make a class set and enable them to more effectively manipulate equations and algebraic expressions. This will allow them to remain on track with the eighth grade concepts they are studying while they work separately on their computational skills at other times. It will allow me to provide them with more meaningful word problems and real-life situations that are often not represented by easy to manipulate numbers. Finally, it will help to relieve the of much of the frustration and anxiety they feel when they don't have the tools they need to succeed on their work.

An organized set of calculators will not only help my class this year, but for years to come.

My eighth graders will be very appreciative and it will have a direct impact on their learning. Please help provide my students with these valuable tools!
