Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Mrs. Higgins, how do you spell considerate? Mrs. Higgins, what does mezzanine mean? Is that a noun or a verb? How many syllables are in that? Everyday my students come to me with questions that their curious minds ask and their journaling fingers await anxiously for the answers.

My students are lower income, mainly Mexican students who live in poor neighborhoods and come from uneducated parents.

They are the sweetest students with a want in them to better themselves through education. We talk all time about what they want and expect from life. They expect a middle school education from me and from them I want respect and the knowledge that they are giving everything they have and trying to the best of their ability. I have mainly special ed inclusion students with two classes of special education resource students. My inclusion classes are a reading improvement class which also practices writing.

My Project

We have a very old classroom set of dictionaries. I don't have enough for all the students, the paperback ones either have no cover or torn covers, they are written in and old. Of the set we have they range from paperback children's dictionaries to difficult collegiate dictionaries that are too advanced for my students. If they each had a dictionary at their disposal to use while reading and writing it would advance these two skills that they already struggle with. I am hoping that constant use of a dictionary will be something that they take with them after my class and use in life. I am also hoping that using a dictionary is a skill that they can take home and show their parents and maybe help them with their English learning skills.

My students have a difficult time in school to begin with being special ed, but then you throw in the lack of supplies and it just gets frustrating for them and the teacher.

They struggle with reading and writing and having dictionaries for them to use as an added resource will be a tremendous advantage. I am hoping that this one inexpensive resource can help them become more confident in their reading and writing.
