Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Learning through exploration is what every student loves to do! I remember going outside on nature walks when I was little and making the connection to how science is related to my life! Students need the opportunity to learn from science in real-life situations that is meaningful.
Our school is a Title 1 school in a low-income area and the majority of my students are English language learners.
My students love to come to school and are very curious about the world around them. They especially love science! Unfortunately, because of the rough neighborhoods most of them live in poverty, they have had limited exposure to nature and to the kinds of "science experiences" suburban students have (science museums, field trips, vacations, camps). Our district, like many districts, has no money for "extras" and the materials I have to teach science are very limited. My students need all the hands-on experiences I can provide them with to inspire them to learn and to pursue their interest in science.
My Project
Kindergarten is vital for young children to learn about our environment with hands-on materials during whole group instruction and independently. It's important that my students learn and explore the different aspects of science. With the materials I requested, my life-long learners will be able to understand science in "real-life", instead of what they see and hear about in books. These materials are great for English language learners because of the support it provides.
When given the chance, my students are able to share their thinking and bring their own ideas to solve problems.
When allowing and giving student the opportunity that are less fortunate to have this exposure, they are greatly appreciated of what other children in more fortunate schools take for granted. My students are eager to learn, no matter their socioeconomic status. Help our class please.
