More Graphic Novels = More Love for Reading!

My students need individual and sets of high quality graphic novels for independent reading and book clubs.

My Students

I know this project will be a success because it has already worked. My students have received many great new graphic novels through Donors Choose and they are addicted to reading! They are devouring the books and I want to give them more chances and more materials to love reading.

My classroom is PACKED this year.

I have 34 students, with 12 different native languages spoken and a variety of academic needs. I teach at a Title I school and it is the most diverse and largest K-8 in the state of Oregon, with over 30 languages spoken on campus. Our school has been hit hard with budget cuts, and the library has no budget to purchase new books. Coming to school with basic supplies is a challenge for most of my students, and the chance to access new and quality books doesn't happen often. I have received graphic novels from a previous Donors Choose project and I immediately realized I needed more. Students who normally grumble during silent reading are suddenly rushing to the bookshelves and I watch them sharing what they read with other classmates.

My Project

I am an avid adult reader, and I read graphic novels on my own. I researched and read all of the books I am requesting because I want to get the biggest bang for the buck. I have created lesson plans for independent teen graphic novels that have been published so I guarantee that the books will be enjoyed and absorbed by my students. I also teach Art & Drawing, using graphic novels as references and examples for the students to see additional connections with the books.

Instilling a love for learning is a priority in my classroom, and I know that having these materials will make a difference in their reading experiences.

Your support will directly support my students everyday, and I know they will be extremely grateful.
