Money Does Matter: Students Learn Financial Literacy Skills

My students need "managing your money" series board games, "math club" games, 10 rolls of calculator tape, a print display calculator, and coin stamps.

I teach a very motivated, excited group of 21 5th and 7th grade gifted students in Hawaii.

Picture this: You're in the mall and see the $28 jacket you've wanted FOREVER is now on sale and is discounted 20%. You quickly check your wallet and find a $20 and a $5 bill. You remember that our state tax is 4.25%. Are you able to figure out if you have enough money for the "to die for" jacket or do you leave the store in frustration? Has this ever happened to you? Most likely, yes! In the real world we encounter problems that require us to act quickly and use our financial and math skills to make wise decisions.

The supplies requested will help my students start learning how to become financially literate members of our society. By using the fun board and interactive games, the students will quickly learn about: budgeting, interest, tax, discounts and other key skills while building upon their mathematics skills as well (decimals, percentages, multiplication and division).

The tools I have requested will help me educate our future leaders about how to be wise, financially literature consumers. These tools (which students will see as fun and exciting methods to learn) will help prepare our future generation.
