This Maker Faire booth was overflowing with the busy hands of grandkids and grandparents constructing eye-catching designs out of brightly colored, interlocking polygons. My maker students would love to get these kits in their hands.
Hola, and welcome to my proposal to support the math and maker skills of curious, earnest, and eager first graders among whom is a student with both military parents deployed overseas.
These deserving children attend a high poverty school with a 28:1 student/teacher ratio without teachers for art, music, Physical Education, or computers in a state that is #48 in education spending and #1 in prison spending.
My Project
These ItsPhun kits abound with opportunities for makers to plan thoughtfully, execute patiently, and steadfastly persevere--all qualities important for STEM careers. Students will write and plan their models in the composition books with black markers and document their creations on the protected mini iPads in protective cases.
But wait, there's more! To share their designs, students can use the technology to make stop-motion instructional videos. They will move from casual play to serious learning about storytelling, performing, editing, and critical evaluation, as they take on roles of model maker, writer, set designer, camera operator, and film director.
