Millions of Years in the Making: A Day in the Luray Caverns

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

"Tell me and I'll forget; show me and I remember; involve me and I'll understand." Ever since I heard this Chinese proverb years ago, I knew it was how I wanted my earth science students to learn. Students who have a real-world, firsthand experience will ultimately get the most out of it!

My students attend a public military high school in an inner city school district within Virginia.

These students are highly motivated, disciplined, and enjoy being outside of the classroom when learning. As ninth graders, they are in a crucial year of their high school careers. Unlike other grades, ninth graders have to go through a year full of military assessments and training, which all must be successfully passed, in order to remain cadets at the school. Since my students work very hard their ninth grade year, I try very hard to do what I can to put together an exciting, fun-filled field trip toward the end of the year!

My Project

I have requested tickets for 75 students to tour the Luray caverns. With each student ticket to the Luray caverns, each student will be able to tour the caverns, as well as choose between attempting to complete a complicated Garden Maze or try their hand at an exciting ropes adventure course! The tour of the caverns will provide a great look into karst topography features created over millions of years in the underground limestone rock formations.

Many of my students come from low-income families.

Their school district provides free breakfasts and lunches every day for every student. I'm giving this background information in order for there to be the understanding that for many of these students, a trip such as this may not be possible. Your donation to this project will not only make this trip possible for all of my students, but it will show my students that people out there who may not know them care about them and their education!
