Middle Schoolers Writing as College Scholars Do

My students need a document camera that will project their writing onto our SMART Board so that they can view, analyze, and improve their own writing in class.

My Students

Young scholars today grow up in a fast-paced, multi-task driven world. Yet to excel in college, these scholars must master the art of composition. Thus they must internalize that writing is a process that requires planning and revising. As such, the challenge is deliver writing lessons that MOVE!

My 7th grade scholars attend a highly-effective charter school serving grades six through twelve in its seventh-year of operation.

Every graduate of their school has been accepted to and gone on to college - including Amherst College, Southern Methodist University, and DePauw University. They attend the only middle or high school in the county to receive Indiana’s Four-Star School Award in the 2009-2010 school year. As 7th graders in an Accelerated school, they are expected to master both 7th and 8th grade English/Language Arts learning objectives. All 7th grade scholars are held to this rigorous standard - we simply do not track. I have two big goals for all of my scholars this year: (1) To improve their reading levels by two grade levels and (2) to master 100% of the 7th and 8th grade skills taught. These big goals, the accelerated curriculum, and our motto of "college or die" are just a few of the ways that we reinforce the idea that they are one day going to college.

My Project

Writing is essential for success in college. Beginning in the sixth grade, our scholars learn how to write in analytic, argumentative manner. We scaffold elements of the Toulmin Model of Argumentation across our 6th through 12th grade trajectory so that scholars' writing progresses through a singular, consistent method of critical thinking and writing. The end goal is clear: our scholars will move on to college equipped, through years of practice, to write in a collegiate manner. As seventh-graders, they struggle the most with the notion that writing is a process. With a document camera I would tranform Writer's Workshops into fast-paced, interactive sessions where students (1) write one paragraph, (2) observe via the document camera how to edit the paragraph they just wrote, (3) revise their own writing, (4) repeat steps 1 through 3 until complete. I firmly believe this would not only improve scholars' engagement, but it would also instill within them that writing is a process.

With a document camera, I will be able to project my scholars' writing onto the SMART Board at will, for immediate analysis, editing, and revising - within a single class period.

This immediate feedback to all scholars about how their essays are evolving will improve their editing, their overall essays, and get them bought into the value of revising their own writing - through lessons that MOVE!
