My students need math manipulatives.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I want all my students to be fearless mathematicians at the end of the year, but many are hesitant because members of their family have struggled with math.
My students are absolutely amazing!
I am so proud of each and every one of them for their dedication to learning at school despite events in the community. Our school is in a suburb of St. Louis that has been affected by violence and unrest since August. My students, colleagues, and district have faced many challenges in making this a successful year for our students but we are persevering regardless of the obstacles. My students come from a lower socioeconomic status which has made it challenging to get them even the basic supplies for school. All of our staff has purchased materials from our own money because we are determined to give our students the best education they can get.
I am so excited about these number and shape manipulatives because they are items my students can, and will, use each day. My students will use these during Math Work Stations to build math skills such as: number identification, rote counting, number fluency, and sorting. Students will work in groups of three to complete each activity. On a typical day students will work in groups to complete five work stations together but with support from me. They each have a job in the group to make sure everyone participates. For example, students using the sorting resource from this project will each complete one shape sort and explain to their team members how they sorted each item. Students that are completing the counting chain link in this project will each identify the number on their card, count and connect the correct about of links, and then share their work with their team.
Donations from this project will improve my classroom because they will make math more interesting.
The resources in this project are bright and colorful. They are also items in which students can learn through play which is so critical at this age. These resources will engage my students and show them math can be fun, not challenging or boring. My students will also learn how to work together to complete a task and share their ideas.
