Math Magicians Need More Math Manipulatives

My students need various manipulatives for counting activities.

My Students

Do you remember in grade school all of the never ending math work sheets? What about the black and white pictures to count? I do. It was a necessary chore that sucked the joy out the learning process. Math is still important. Please help me make it a fun learning experience.

My student are special needs children that have not been successful in the traditional classroom.

I have taught in a Title I school in northeast Louisiana for 8 years. This year I have 12 students, some with autism, 1 with downs syndrome and others with specific learning needs. All of these children require lessons that are taught in a visual hands on method. They need a constant changing of manipulatives to help keep their attention and promote learning.

My Project

My students will use the many math counters in many math activities within the class room. Matching the number to the correct number of counters is a skill they will work on. Sorting the colors, shapes and categories is also a necessary math skill. The counters and games that I have chosen can be changed out often, hopefully maintaining the students attention for the entire lesson. Research proves that if students remain interested for longer intervals, learning and retention of the skill will take place. Math is an important skill we must acquire if we want to become independent as an adult. If my students can count, sort, match or identify numbers, they could possibly be hired in jobs that will correlate with their skill. As teachers we all assist children in becoming well adjusted products of our society. Special education students should have the necessary materials needed to help them reach their maximum potential as well.

Many school districts strive to give the children the best that they can afford to grow successful adults.

Special needs students are not always given the same advantage because they require additional materials to achieve success. These material cost extra money that some districts do not have. I recall the old saying, "It takes a village to raise a child", with special needs children it will require at least 2 villages.
