Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My student are a diverse group of "beautiful special-ness," that have limited math skills. We worked all last year to learn addition and subtraction; we ran out of pencils and paper. And I had to use duct tape fix the pencil sharpener. This year we will work on multiplication and division.

My inner-city students are very sweet and innocent to the ways of the streets around their homes.

My classroom theme is "Respect is understanding beyond what your eyes see." This is supporting my students to help each other in their uniqueness, problems and learning. We have to move slowly with math skills...but they are learning that math is patterns, just like music...and this helps them with understanding the skills being presented. Having a Resource Room allows all of us to accept each other where ever we are in our understanding of Math...and supports helping others to learn in different ways through sharing ideas. I am attempting to provide the most differentiated of environments for my students who cover a spectrum of disabilities and skills. Working with Autistic, Intellectually Disabled, and Learning Disabled we will need to begin with review of last years skills and then build; and this requires doing rote math equations independently. And thus the materials that I need.

My Project

Now that we will be moving into Multiplication, Division, and then Order of Operation, we have to get the students ready to do multiple step problem solving...this requires a structured and to scaffold presentation of ideas, and the materials for student to do independent work to promote rote skill development. My students need the paper, pencils and graph paper requested to help with them do their independent work. Few come to school with any materials work work with, and there is limited supplies. The student goal will be demonstrating solid basic operation skills by mid year...and then extending these into higher learning applications in Order of Operation problems. My students need to learn to work independently and with confidence in themselves. I will support this with modeling, collaborative practice, independent work and a subscription to "Prodigy Math.com." All of this allows students to reinforce skills learned in class and follow through with independent work at home.

Math is a necessary and essential skill for life...and since I will be with these students next year, and the year following, my goal is to extend their learning in functional and life skills that are math based.

And the self-confidence to use these skills independently in class and at home. This encompassing finance, paychecks, time cards, groceries, etc. Culminating in my student graduating year with a field trip to a restaurant where they will be able to demonstrate what they have learned.
